Due to a wide rain band, most of Victoria has seen rain; nevertheless, the BOM warns that certain locations may receive up to 100 millimeters of rain over night. The Bureau of Mines and Energy (BOM) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Wimmera and portions of the Mallee, including Horsham, Stawell, Ouyen, and Maryborough.
There is also a severe weather warning for northern locations, including Echuca, Shepparton, Wodonga, Wangaratta, and Bright. The majority of northern river catchments, including those near Melbourne, are under a flood watch advisory. Emergency services issue a warning regarding the potential for isolated flash flooding. Sandbagging has been implemented in places like Wangaratta and Shepparton. On Sunday morning, the rain continued to the northwest and by midday, it had reached central Victoria and Melbourne.
Storms in the south-west
Heavy rain was triggered by a huge storm in Warrnambool, which is in the state’s southwest.
More than 50 mm of rain poured in two and a half hours, according to the BOM. Numerous homes have sustained damage, and some vacationers in a nearby RV park were forced to vacate one site. In the past twelve hours, 46 Warrnambool residents have benefited from the SES.
SES: Flash flooding locations difficult to forecast
The State Emergency Service (SES) had 140 callouts in the last 24 hours, of which around 40 were still open, according to Mark Cattell, state agency commander.
Mr. Cattell stated, “Many of those are people asking for sandbags.”
“There’s also the possibility of flooding, which typically occurs when there’s a lot of rapid runoff into people’s homes,”
An image from rain radar that shows precipitation across most of Victoria By mid-afternoon on January 7, rain had fallen over most of Victoria. He predicted that Sunday afternoon storms would probably intensify later and that unpredictable flash flooding would result from sporadic, large-scale precipitation.
Also, the SES advises individuals to use caution when near floodwaters.
