Chicago Bears Secure First Major QB Move: Domino Effect Begins

SportsChicago Bears Secure First Major QB Move: Domino Effect Begins

The market must cooperate if the Chicago Bears hope to move Justin Fields. All eyes are focused on free agency because of this. In a few days, the market opens. A number of teams in need of a quarterback were expected to show a great deal of interest in three names. Now, that figure is down to just two. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers locked up at the eleventh hour.

Three conditions must be met for a Fields market to develop. Mayfield’s tenure in Tampa was one. That has indeed happened. The other options included Russell Wilson signing with a team other than Atlanta or Pittsburgh, although both are said to be interested in Fields, and Kirk Cousins remaining in Minnesota. The good news is that Cousins’ comeback is still being discussed with the Vikings. He will continue to test the free agent market, which is bad news. The Falcons are reportedly ready to push hard to sign him. But they won’t be by themselves. Denver is reportedly going to be involved as well.

Wilson has already had a meeting with the Steelers. But other teams, including the Raiders and Giants, are also involved.

The Chicago Bears are content to wait this thing out.

The market hasn’t cooperated, even though they would have loved to finish things before free agency started. GM Ryan Poles has made the decision to exercise patience rather than press the matter. After observing the actions of the top free agents, he will reevaluate the market in a few weeks. With any hope, some teams will find themselves unable to land any of their selections, which will put them in a difficult position. They either hope that one of the lower-tier choices is worth the risk, or they try to trade up for a quarterback in the draft. That kind of environment makes players like Fields much easier to swallow.

Mayfield staying in Tampa Bay is a good first step. It feels like Cousins is the one who will steer where all of this goes. If he ends up in Atlanta, it could make things difficult for the Chicago Bears. If he goes almost anywhere else, the door pops wide open for a trade to happen. As always, the hardest part is the waiting. In the meantime, Poles will focus his efforts on shoring up other parts of the roster.
