NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said on Saturday that the Denver Broncos are in the midst of sending star wide receiver Jerry Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns in return for the No. 135 (fifth-round) and No. 202 (sixth-round) picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Until the new league year officially begins on March 13, no transaction may be finalized.
The Broncos, who had only six selections in the draft this year—one each in the first two rounds—now get two late-round draft picks as a result of the deal. According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, it also spares Denver $12.987 million in 2024 salary cap space, money that might be utilized in other ways when free agency begins the following week.
Like Cooper’s trade to Cleveland two years ago, Jeudy was obtained for little draft capital, giving quarterback Deshaun Watson another weapon to complement Amari Cooper for the Browns.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Broncos selected Jeudy with the fifteenth overall pick. During his four seasons in Denver, Jeudy caught 211 passes for 3,053 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Nevertheless, he failed to reach the 1,000+ receiving yard plateau and finished 2023 with just two touchdown receptions on 758 yards.
The previous year, Jeudy was dogged by reports that he was up for trade because of his mediocre performance in comparison to other wide receivers in the same draft class. The 24-year-old wide receiver was retained by the Broncos during the season despite the fact that they exercised his fifth-year option last offseason. However, it seems they have opted to part ways with him as they undergo a complete offensive overhaul.
When the Broncos revealed on Monday that they had told quarterback Russell Wilson of their plan to dismiss him at the beginning of the league season, they had already made significant news this week.
Jeudy’s exit makes room for Marvin Mims Jr. and other Broncos wide receivers to have a greater effect. The 2023 draft pick should now be in position to play a more significant role alongside Courtland Sutton after registering 22 receptions for 377 yards in his rookie season, according to head coach Sean Payton, who recently stated he expects to see more of the player’s talent in his second year.
Jeudy, meanwhile, is given a new team to start with as he enters the final year of his rookie contract before perhaps hitting free agency.
