Eagles Reportedly Show Genuine Interest in Signing Giants’ Free Agent RB Saquon Barkley

SportsEagles Reportedly Show Genuine Interest in Signing Giants' Free Agent RB Saquon Barkley

According to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed on a three-year, $37.75 million contract that may be worth up to $46.75 million, with $26 million fully guaranteed at signing.

With a potential annual pay of $15.833 million, Barkley now surpasses the franchise tag number and would become the second-highest running back in NFL history.

The two-time Pro Bowl running back missed three games due to a high ankle sprain he sustained during the Giants’ Week 2 victory against the Arizona Cardinals, despite rushing for 962 yards and six touchdowns for the team.

Barkley, 27, was paid $10.1 million to play last season under an amended franchise tag after the sides were unable to come to an agreement on a long-term contract. After all, the Giants decided not to use the tag once again this season at $12.1 million, allowing him to become a free agent.

Barkley had stated time and time again that he wanted to be a “Giant for life,” but an ESPN source said that Barkley rejected an offer to guarantee him about $23 million last season.

Barkley bid farewell to Giants supporters on social media.

Despite having a stellar first year and winning Offensive first of the Year after compiling a career-best 2,028 total yards, Barkley—the second overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft—has had a troubled career due to injuries. Four of the previous five seasons he has missed at least three games, including the majority of the 2020 season due to an ACL tear.

Over his six seasons with the Giants, Barkley amassed 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns through rushes. In addition, he caught 288 passes for 2,100 yards and 12 touchdowns.
