Emma Stone Clinches Second Career Oscar Win for ‘Poor Things’

EntertainmentEmma Stone Clinches Second Career Oscar Win for 'Poor Things'

On Sunday, Emma Stone accepted her second Academy Award, taking home the best actress prize for her portrayal of a lady brought back to life in the gloomy comedy “Poor Things.” In 2016, the 35-year-old actress won her first Oscar for the musical “La La Land.”
Stone portrayed Bella Baxter in the Frankenstein-inspired film “Poor Things,” a character who commits herself and is reanimated by a deranged scientist (Willem Dafoe).

A lot of Bella’s dramatic self-discovery and liberation in the film is achieved through sex, which she first explores with a colorful lawyer played by Mark Ruffalo and later with a string of customers in a Parisian brothel. Along her voyage across a surrealized depiction of 19th-century Europe, Bella becomes more and more independent.
According to Stone, this was her best job to date. The actor expressed her admiration for Bella’s curiosity and her ability to recognize both good and bad.

In the film “La La Land,” which honored classic Hollywood, Stone sang and sung as an aspiring actress opposite Ryan Gosling.
For the drama “The Favorite” from 2018 and the 2014 film “Birdman,” she was also nominated for best supporting actress.
Stone, who is well-known for her wide eyes and red hair, made her debut in the raucous comedy “Superbad” in 2007. Her other notable roles include “The Help” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

“Poor Things” was released by Searchlight Pictures, a unit of Walt Disney.
