At the University of Connecticut, an investigation was under way on Friday following the death of a student who fell from the top of an on-campus parking garage.
Just after 9:30 a.m. on Friday, the Hartford Courant reported, campus police and fire department personnel were summoned to investigate an incident at the South Garage on Jim Calhoun Way. In the end, they concluded that a guy had fallen to the street below from a “high level” of the parking garage, according to school officials.
According to UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz, he was taken to Windham Hospital with severe injuries, where he passed away soon after arriving. Although Reitz verified he was an undergraduate student at the institution, his name has not been made public.
Campus police alerted students to the fact that there was no threat or danger to the campus community at around ten in the morning.
Reitz released a statement saying, “The University offers its sincere condolences to his family and friends, and is providing support and resources to other students with whom he was connected.” She went on to say that anyone in need will receive assistance services.
Authorities “have found no criminal or suspicious element” thus far, but the situation is still being looked into, according to the statement.
The Office of the State Medical Examiner will ascertain the cause of the student’s death, which is not yet known.
