Height of 6’11” and 284 pounds, Nikola Jokic is ranked as the third-heaviest player in the NBA. Even though he is the greatest passing center of all time, he is actually one of the finest passers in NBA history, so the claim is a little understated. He might be the most intelligent player, most resilient superstar, best defensive rebounder, and top post scorer in the league. Having already taken home two MVP awards, he is currently the favorite to capture a third this year. Having already claimed one NBA title, he stands a great chance of winning another this summer.
For a player like Jokic, the litany of accolades seems to go on forever, and in part that’s because we are always in the dark about how good he is. Consider the shot he made against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night at the end of the first quarter. When Jokic finally had a chance to shoot at the end of the quarter, he knew he had to act fast. He drained a shot over a defenseless Eric Gordon after initiating one of his trademark moves, the Sombor Shuffle, from behind the three-point line at the top of the key.
This is what the best player in the world at the peak of his powers looks like. Watch the video here:
The alternate angle is even better:
After the All-Star break, the Nuggets had a six-game winning streak going into the evening and were unbeaten. For all of their prospective rivals, Denver’s relentless pursuit of the top seed in the Western Conference should be frightening. We are all aware of how last year’s playoffs with homecourt advantage for the Nuggets ended.
Jokic is simply too skilled. He is a selfless yet powerful player who plays with remarkable speed and patience. Despite his enormous size, he possesses extraordinary technique. He will rank higher on the list of all-time greats than a lot of your childhood idols, but that’s a discussion for another time.
For now, just enjoy watching Jokic hoop. There’s no one like him.
