According to individuals who spoke to the Herald, the New England Patriots have spoken with the Chargers about apparent trade or cut prospects during this week’s open negotiation session.
The NFL’s new league year kicks out on Wednesday at 4 p.m., and the Chargers need to comply as they are over $25 million over the salary ceiling. Wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, as well as edge defenders Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, are their most obvious trade or cut prospects.
The Patriots are in need of both edge defenders and wide receivers.
On the third day of the 2024 league season, Williams’s $3 million roster bonus and $17 million salary are both due. On March 17, Allen’s $5 million roster bonus and $18.1 million salary are both due. On the third day of the 2024 league season, Mack’s $5.5 million roster bonus and $17.55 million salary are both due. On the third day of the 2024 league season, Bosa’s $7 million roster bonus and $17 million salary are both due.
If talks turn into trade talks, the Patriots have the salary cap flexibility to sign any one of the four players.
Williams, who turns 30 in October, was sidelined by an ACL tear for the majority of the 2023 campaign. Nonetheless, he has two seasons with 1,000 yards or more in his record. In 13 games in 2022, he caught 63 passes for 895 yards and four touchdowns. Prior to his injury last season, he caught 19 catches for 249 yards and one touchdown.
Allen, who turns 32 in April, just finished a season with 1,243 yards, 108 receptions, and seven touchdowns in just 13 games. Throughout his 11-year career, the six-time Pro Bowl selection has played for the Chargers, where he has six receptions of 1,000 yards.
Mack led the Chargers in sacks the previous season with 17. In addition to playing for the Raiders and Bears, the 33-year-old pass rusher has 101.5 career sacks over ten seasons and eight Pro Bowl selections.
Bosa has played for the Chargers for his entire eight-year career and has been selected to the Pro Bowl four times. Despite playing in only 14 games in the past two seasons, he has 67 career sacks. He turns 29 in July.
The Patriots intend to waive DeVante Parker on Wednesday and have re-signed wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Jalen Reagor. In addition, they have interest in Calvin Ridley, a free agent wide receiver, and have wide receivers Kawaan Baker, Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas, T.J. Luther, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Tyquan Thornton on their 90-man roster.
Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings, two Edge defenders, will be eligible for free agency on Wednesday. At defensive end/outside linebacker, the team also features Matthew Judon, Deatrich Wise, and Keion White.
