American actress Olivia Munn disclosed that she underwent four surgeries in the last ten months after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis last year.
The 43-year-old Newsroom actress revealed on Instagram that she has undergone multiple mastectomy procedures.
Despite being “aggressive” and “fast moving,” Munn claimed that the cancer was discovered with “enough time that I had options.”
She went on to say that she “wanted to get through the hardest parts before sharing” the news with others.
Three days after going to the Oscars with her spouse, comedian John Mulaney, Munn provides an update on her condition. Malcolm, their two-year-old son, is shared.
The actress, who has been in films such as Iron Man 2, Magic Mike, and X-Men: Apocalypse, revealed that she had a mammogram and tested for 90 different cancer genes before learning about the disease.
Munn said that despite the negative results of those tests, her doctor had calculated her “breast cancer risk assessment score,” which prompted additional testing, including a biopsy, which revealed “I had Luminal B cancer in both breasts.”
‘I’m lucky’
She shared a video and images from the hospital along with her statement, writing: “Luminal B is a malignancy that moves quickly and aggressively.
“I underwent a double mastectomy thirty days following that biopsy. One day I was feeling great, and the next I woke up in a hospital bed following a ten-hour surgery.
Adding, “I’m lucky,” “We caught it with enough time that I had options.”
She added, “I’ve only cried twice since the diagnosis.”
Munn thanked Mulaney, her friends and family, the medical team, nurses, and other hospital employees as she concluded her message.
“I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect,” she stated.
For always having framed pictures of our little child Malcolm on my nightstand so it would be the first thing I saw when I woke up and for being there before every surgery.
“Thank you to the friends who’ve had breast cancer and the friends who connected me to friends who’ve had breast cancer for guiding me through some of my most uncertain and overwhelming moments.”
‘Fighting so hard’
Mulaney thanked Munn for “fighting so hard to be here for us” in a comment on the page.
He went on, “Malc and I adore you.”
According to the UK charity Breast Cancer Now, women in their 40s account for almost one in seven incidences of breast cancer in the country, despite the disease being less common in younger women.
Sally Kum, assistant director of nursing at the charity, said, “Anyone in the UK who’s worried about their risk or family history of the disease can speak to their GP to find out if they’re eligible for further assessment.”
“It’s also crucial that women know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and the importance of regular breast checking, as the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chance of treatment being successful.”
