What is Glioblastoma?
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons states that grade IV astrocytoma, or glioblastoma (GBM), is a brain tumor that grows quickly and is extremely aggressive. It starts in the brain and spreads to surrounding tissues, but usually does not reach other organs. GBM may arise from lower-grade astrocytomas or develop from scratch. It usually affects adults and is most typically seen in the frontal and temporal lobes of the cerebral hemispheres.
GBM is a terrible type of brain cancer that, if treatment is not received, frequently results in death within six months. Since it can greatly affect overall survival rates, prompt access to professional neuro-oncological and neurosurgical care is essential.
With about 47.7% of cases, GBM is the most common malignant brain and central nervous system tumor. It occurs at a rate of about 3.21 per 100,000 persons.
Depending on where the tumor is located, GBM symptoms might vary, but they may include speech difficulty, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, mood or personality changes, cognitive decline, chronic headaches, blurred or double vision, and changes in speech.
